How i view the procedure of a repair:

A repair diagnosis is the methodical, evidence-based process of isolating the root cause of a vehicle issue before turning a wrench. A “parts cannon,” on the other hand, is a mechanic slang for guesswork: sequentially replacing parts—-hoping one fixes the problem—-without confirming what actually failed.

The limitations of parts store scans: Auto parts stores and some untrustworthy repair shops offer free scans to sell parts or repairs. Their goal is to move inventory, not necessarily to fix your car efficiently. Their scanner might show a code for a “Lean Condition,”, and the counter person might suggest a new Mass Air Flow sensor. You buy it, install it, and the problem persists. Why? Because a vacuum leak from a cracked 5 euro hose caused the lean condition, not the expensive sensor. Keep also in mind that using a phone app or cheap code reader yourself might not tell you the whole story of the root cause.

I use advanced scanner equipment with live data streams that does far more then show fault codes, including wave forms that register the O2 sensor. It sees what the car engine computer is seeing in real-time. This allowes me to spot glitches that a simple code reader would miss entirely.

It is getting harder to find good trustworthy mechanics

If you have trouble finding an honest repair person in Portugal who is able—or even willing—to speak English, you’re not alone.
